Around the Canal du Nivernais

Created in the 19th century to transport firewood to Paris, the Nivernais canal, which is set in enchanting surroundings, winds its way around the centre of the Nièvre region, from Decize to Clamecy. Edged by an abundance of plant life, this area enjoys a romantic and mysterious air, ensuring its reputation as one of the most beautiful canals in Europe.

A peaceful stroll or cruise along the towpaths and waterways of the canal offers the ideal way to admire the area’s natural beauty.

The Nivernais canal is also teeming with fauna and plays host to numerous species of aquatic birds and fish. Thanks to its variety of animal and plant life, the site has been classified as a Nature Area of Ecological Interest for Fauna and Flora (ZNIEFF).

Canal birds
The canal offers a moist environment that attracts numerous species of aquatic birds, which mate and nest along the towpaths, in shallow ditches and the adjacent marshes, as well as in neighbouring pools. A little patience and a good pair of binoculars are the order of the day if you want to spot great crested grebes, grey herons, belted kingfishers, grey wagtails, black kites and many other species. Winter is the most interesting season for bird spotting.

Les Etangs de Baye and de Vaux
These pools, which are linked to the canal, were created in the 19th century and provide a haven for a remarkable ecological environment that visitors can discover at any time of year thanks to specially signed trails. Classified as “Protected Natural Areas”, visitors are asked to respect the fragile nature of these pools.

The Voûtes de La Collancelle
Hidden away under the dense vegetation lies a 2,500-foot-long tunnel, a reminder that this canal, despite its wild appearance, is man-made.

The Sardy Valley
• Enjoy a walk or bicycle ride along the Sardy Valley and admire the exceptional alignment of 16 locks and the lush green towpath that fringes the length of the canal.
