Cruises and rivers tours

From Clamecy to Corbigny, the Nivernais canal wends its way between the towns and villages scattered along the Yonne valleys, passes thorough wild landscapes before reaching the Vaux and Baye ponds. The canal then descends the Loire Valley via the meadows of Bazois. The canal crosses through areas of exceptional natural beauty.

Following the river current, the Canal Latéral à la Loire flows through beautiful, rural landscapes filled with charm bordering the Sancerre vineyards.

Today, these canals are almost totally dedicated to boating. No licence required, pilot your own boat for a day, weekend or full week.

Clamecy, the wood-rafting capital
On the Nivernais canal, where the Yonne and Beuvron rivers merge, this medieval city was the wood-rafting capital for supplies to Paris. One native of these parts is sailor Alain Colas.

Chitry-les-Mines et Corbigny

A stop at Chitry, in Jules Renard country, is an opportunity to discover his home village so well depicted in his best-known book Poil de Carotte (the birthplace of Jules Renard, Château de Chitry, La Gloriette).

Châtillon-en-Bazois and Le Bazois
Set along the Canal du Nivernais, this lovely fortified castle boasting a defence tower and gardens is certainly worth a detour. A selection of footpaths and the Etangs de Vaux and Baye are close by.

Town of Decize
At the crossroads of the Canal Latéral à la Loire and the Canal du Nivernais, this is the only place where visitors can navigate and stop along the River Loire. The charming town of Decize stands on a rocky island in the middle of the river. Exceptional.

Port de la Jonction in Nevers
On the Canal latéral à la Loire, a stop at Nevers’ harbour is an ideal base for discovering the town and the surrounding region.

• Trip to Les Voûtes de la Collancelle by electric boat
This series of tunnels, just before the Canal du Nivernais reaches the Etangs de Vaux and Baye, is spectacular.

Guided barge trips to Decize via the Loire

• Private-hire electric boats from the Stade nautique of Decize

• Discovery trips from Nevers along the Loire aboard a toue cabanée, a flat-bottomed barge specific to the region

Summer river rally
Every year, one of the communes along the Canal du Nivernais is host to a regatta. On the programme: parade, fireworks and special events.

Lac des Settons
35-minute trip with commentary in French and English on a boat with panoramic view.
