A town of art and history

Perched on a promontory overlooking the Loire, which meanders around the city, Nevers offers a stunning selection of historic buildings, including masterpieces such as the Saint-Cyr et Sainte-Julitte cathedral, the Palais Ducal, the city walls, the Porte du Croux and the church of Sainte-Etienne.
As you stroll along the medieval alleyways, admire its many town houses, which have survived since the Middle Ages, or look out over the rooftops to enjoy a different perspective of the town. An unforgettable experience.

Enjoying a long association with the world of art, Nevers is also famous for its earthenware, which is inspired by both traditional and contemporary designs. Each work is stamped with a tiny symbol, the “Nœud Vert” or “green knot”, attesting to its authenticity and quality. This highly active community of arts and crafts professionals includes glassmakers, carpenters, jewellers and confectioners, whose work is guaranteed to delight you.

Follow the blue line
This walking trail around the centre of town enables visitors to stroll to their heart’s content around the historic streets and shopping areas of Nevers, where they’ll discover a host of surprising sights.

The cathedral and its stained glass windows
Boasting two choirs, one Romanesque, the other Gothic, Nevers Cathedral offers yet another stunning treasure to delight the senses – contemporary stained glass windows that fill the cathedral with a delicate light that’s brimming with colour. This surprising display was made possible by the artists Raoul Ubac, Claude Viallat, Gottfried Honegger and Alberolla.

The Palais Ducal, the first Renaissance château on the Loire
Another jewel in the crown of Nevers’ proud heritage is the former residence of the lords of Nevers, which dates from the 15th century. The chateau features exhibition areas devoted to local traditions and know-know (Formula 1, earthenware, and more) as well as temporary exhibitions (literature, earthenware, paintings, photographs, etc.).

Nevers Earthenware
The blue “faïence” or earthenware of Nevers enjoys an extremely strong reputation. Stroll around the arts and crafts boutiques where over four hundred years of tradition is kept alive, including the Faïencerie Montagnon (the Montagnon Potteryworks), which were founded in 1648.
